Camilla Boneschi, Francesco Bozzi, Susanna Ciucci, Valerio Fidenzi, Giulia Masci Ametta, Linda Poncetta, Luca Scolari and Anna Spinelli: these are the young talents selected by the publishing houses of the Mondadori Group as part of the Millennial Editors project.

Launched in February, the project offered a unique opportunity to 8 recent graduates  under-30 in order to gain work experience in the publishing world, after being chosen on the basis of an outstanding curriculum and a deep passion for books and reading.

All of the aspiring editor were subjected to a rigorous recruitment process and selected from over 4,200 applications, received by the Mondadori Group during the month the project was launched with an announcement on the Monster Italia web site.

Following an initial selection phase based on qualifications and experience, 81 candidates were given the possibility to participate in an Edithon: a full day at the Palazzo Mondadori, in which the candidates met the leading figures from each of the Group’s publishing houses and could demonstrate their skills through individual and group tests.

8 Millennial Editors stood out among them and, starting from this month, will start a two-year apprenticeship at Mondadori, Einaudi, Rizzoli, BUR, Sperling & Kupfer, Mondadori Education and Rizzoli Education.

This will give them the chance to make their dream come true and to learn how to become an editor, by interacting and cooperating with all of the colleagues and other protagonists in the book production chain, starting from the authors.

The #MillennialEditors project has also offered an opportunity to discuss and share with young people on social media some of the fundamental aspects of what it means to be a professional editor: videos, photos, “stories” and special content that have recorded a total of over 280,000 views on the Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles of the Mondadori Group.

Vatican Chapels

Gunnar Asplund, the Chapel in the wood, Stockholm, 1920 jpg

In sort of triptych that includes the previous experiences at the Art Biennales of 2013 and 2015, the Holy See takes part for the first time this year in the Venice Architecture Biennale, through the creation of the Vatican Chapels Pavilion curated by Francesco Dal Co.

The project takes its cue from a precise model, the Woodland Chapel built in 1920 by the renowned architect Gunnar Asplund at the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm, a work featured in an initial exhibition space, illustrated with original drawings of the project.

The theme of the chapel as a place of orientation, encounter, mediation and salutation – as Asplund put it – was suggested to ten architects who were invited to design and build ten chapels in a wooded area at one end of the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Therefore this will be a composite, distributed pavilion, visited in stages along an itinerary that is also a spiritual pilgrimage. The chapels created by the architects, thanks to the indispensable support of important contractors and contributors, will be arranged in “an utterly abstract natural setting, marked only by its presence on the lagoon, its openness to the water,” as Dal Co explains, emphasizing the unique, original character of the initiative that has granted the architects complete freedom to design “without any reference to commonly recognized canons.” Inside the chapels, the shared fulcrum and identifying, unifying feature is represented by the presence of the altar and the lectern.

The choice of the invited architects was based on the decision to focus on designers capable of applying different expressive languages, all strong characters from the standpoint of constructive experimentation, belonging to different generations and hailing from Europe, Australia, Japan, the United States and South America, in order to reflect the universal – indeed  “catholic” – nature of the Church.

The architects who have designed the ten chapels and the exhibition space of Vatican chapels are: Andrew Berman (USA), Francesco Cellini (Italy), Javier Corvalàn (Paraguay), Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores (Spain), Norman Foster (UK), Terunobu Fujimori (Japan), Sean Godsell (Australia), Carla Juaçaba (Brazil), Smiljan Radic (Chile), Eduardo Souto de Moura (Portugal), while Francesco Magnani and Traudy Pelzel are the designers of the pavilion that will contain the exhibition of the drawings of Gunnar Asplund for the “Skogskapellet,” the “Woodland Chapel” in Stockholm.

The opening of the Pavilion, with the presence of Cardinal Ravasi, will be on Friday 25 May in the gardens of the Island of San Giorgio in Venice. The Pavilion will remain open to the public from 26 May to 25 November 2018.

The catalogue edited by Francesco Dal Co, with essays by Gianfranco Ravasi, Francesco Dal Co and Elisabetta Molteni, published by Electaarchitettura, will be available from 23 May.

Mondadori Group: book activities under a single business area

Antonio Porro new Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Mondadori Libri S.p.A., a company chaired by Ernesto Mauri

In order to address the challenges of the book market in a more effective and innovative manner – a market deemed both crucial and strategic for its development – today the Mondadori Group has adopted a new organizational structure hinged on a single business area covering the whole range of book activities, from the trade area to school textbooks, from illustrated books and international publications to art and exhibitions.

Forecasts on the book business show that overall revenue in 2017 will top the 500 million euro mark, with profitability in excess of 14%.

The new structure, which has already been adopted by the main players also on the international level, is implemented two years after the heavy investments made in the acquisition of Rcs Libri and represents the starting point of a new phase: the Mondadori Group aims in fact not only to strengthen its leadership in its segments of operation, but also to seize every opportunity for growth on the domestic and foreign markets.

This strategic goal is based on the remarkable results achieved by Books over the past few years, thanks to the people who serve the Group with their outstanding professional qualities, dedication and love for books.

Head of the new area is Antonio Porro, who has also been appointed Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Mondadori Libri S.p.A., a company chaired by Ernesto Mauri, CEO of the Group.

Enrico Selva Coddè, current Managing Director of Mondadori Libri S.p.A., for the Trade area, in his areas of responsibility, now adds the Electa activities for the Books area, the General Manager of which is Stefano Peccatori, who has also been appointed manager of the Sperling&Kupfer and Piemme publishers.

Enrico Selva Coddè remains at the helm of Mondadori, Einaudi, Rizzoli and the Children’s Business Unit, in the traditional policy of competitiveness and clear-cut identity and total independence of each publishing brand.

Still reporting to Antonio Porro: Aaron Buttarelli, General Manager Mondadori Education, Publishing area; Danilo Galimberti, General Manager Mondadori Education, Sales area; Giovanni Bonfanti, General Manager Rizzoli Education; Rosanna Cappelli, General Manager Art, Exhibitions, Electa Museums; Marco Ausenda, Managing Director Rizzoli International Publication.

Gian Arturo Ferrari will continue to offer his publishing advice to the new Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Mondadori Libri S.p.A., Antonio Porro.

“Fire and Fury. Inside the Trump White House”: soon in Italy for Rizzoli

On February 13, Rizzoli publishes “Fire and Fury”, the publishing phenomenon of this beginning of the year.

The book, which was released in the USA on January 5 and initially sold in 150,000 copies, has already reached 1.1 million paper copies sold out – with readers queuing up at night in front of bookshops as in Harry Potter’s day – as well as hundreds of thousands of copies in ebooks and the audio version.

In England, in just a few days and even before its arrival in the bookshop on January 10, the print run reached 400,000 copies and there are already more than 20 countries that have acquired publishing rights. In France the volume, as announced today by Le Figaro, will be released on February 22nd for Laffont.

Lies? It’s all true,”says Wolff, who initially imagined the book as an account of the first 100 days at the White House to be published one year after the beginning of Trump’s presidency and then, unexpectedly, had access to the President and most senior members of his staff, including Steve Bannon, for a total of 18 months (the first interview took place in May 2016), becoming a” constant intruder “.

Michael Wolff, 64, an American author, essayist, and journalist, and a regular columnist and contributor to USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and the UK edition of GQ, has already stirred up a sensation with a biography on Rupert Murdoch (2007, The Man Who Owns the News).
