Mario Resca President of McDonald's Italia, Mario Resca is also the special manager of Cirio, national director of U.P.A. (Unione Pubblicitari Associati), chairman of Italia Zuccheri, chairman of Confimprese, and a non-executive director of Eni and the Mondadroi Group and a member of the Advisory Board of British Telecom Italia. In 2002 he was made a Cavaliere del Lavoro. Born in Ferrara on 21 December 1945, Mario Resca began his career as a business journalist at Espansione (Mondadori-McGraw Hill), in 1968, a year before graduating in economics and business administration at Milan's Bocconi University. After graduating he moved to the Chase Manhattan Bank which was opening its first branch in Italy. He worked at the company's offices in London and New York and in 1972 was appointed head of the overdrafts office in Rome. The following year he was appointed Second Vice President. In 1976 he became a partner at Egon Zehnder (world leader in executive recruitment) where he remained for 15 years, first taking over responsibility for the Italian office and then also of worldwide mergers and acquisitions. During this period he was also a non-executive director of Lancôme Italia, the RCS Corriere della Sera Group and the Versace Group. He was also chairman of Sambonet S.p.A., of Kenwood Italia S.p.A. In 1995 he was appointed president and chief executive of McDonald's Italia with the task of re-launching and developing the brand in Italy. In 1996 10 new restaurants were opened (compared with 23 in the previous ten years) and the following year saw the acquisition of 80 restaurants of the "Burghy" chain, belonging to the Cremonini Group, which became the supplier of beef. This was the first ever acquisition of a competitor ever made by McDonald's and was the first stage in a development strategy that would lead McDonald's Italia to source more than 85% its raw materials supplies locally, making the company an important supporter of the Italian agri-food business. Expansion continued through internal growth and McDonald's Italia currently has more than 330 restaurants, employs 13,000 people (more than 4,000 in supporting activities) and generated 2005 revenues of €500 million. In August 2003 he was appointed special manager of the Cirio - Del Monte Group. |
