The eighties
 
1981
Mondadori signs an agreement with the Canadian group, Harlequin, to launch an Italian version of Harmony, the most popular international series of romantic fiction.
 

The publishing house enters the television sector with the launch of the Retequattro television channel, which is subsequently sold to the Fininvest Group.
 
1988
Mondadori acquires Ediciones Grijalbo and founds Elemond, a company with publishing interests that include the prestigious Electa and Einaudi imprints.
The Group also enters the computer publishing sector with the launch of a new company, Mondadori Informatica.
 
1989 - 1991
A period of instability for the Group's shareholder structure ended in 1991 with the passage of Mondadori - with its books, magazines and printing activities - to Fininvest and of L'Espresso - along with la Repubblica and regional newspapers - to the CIR Group.
 
1990
The Mondadori Group signs a joint venture with the Gruner & Jahr publishing group for the publication of new magazines in Italy.
 
1991
Mondadori becomes part of the Fininvest Group. Leonardo Mondadori is made Chairman of the company.
 
1994
Mondadori lends its name to one of the most successful publishing operations of all time with the publication of Varcare la Soglia della Speranza by Pope John Paul II, published all over the world.

1995
The Group enters the multimedia publishing sector with Mondadori New Media.
I Miti, the first Italian series of very low-priced paperbacks sold in all the main sales outlets including bookshops, newsstands and large stores, is launched and sinals the beginning of a new mass-market strategy aimed at enlarging the Italian book market.
 
Mondadori buys 100% of the Sperling & Kupfer publishing group, which also includes the Frassinelli imprint.
 

 
1996
The publishing house is very successful in the continuously expanding cultural events sector, promoting one of the most important initiatives of the year, the From Monet to Picasso art exhibition.
 
1997
Future development of the publisher is prepared with the establishment of the Mondadori Group's current organisational structure of six business areas and three staff functions. At the same time the first three-year development plan is launched.
 
1998
Mondadori consolidates its leadership in all the sectors in which it operates with a number of initiatives. Among the most significant the launch of the Magazines Panorama Travel and Top Girl; the opening of the first Italian media megastore, the Mondadori Informatica Multicenter in Milan; the development of the franchising area with the acquisition of the Gulliver chain and the opening of Mondadori bookstore franchises.

1999
As the result of an incisive acquisitions and joint venture policy, the Mondadori Group further strengthens its position. In particular the Group develops its activities in the school text book sector with the acquisitions of, Mursia Scuola, Le Monnier and Poseidonia; in magazines with joint ventures with the Hearst Corp and Il Sole 24 Ore; in direct marketing with the creation of Mondolibri - a joint venture between Club degli Editori and Eurolibri (Bertelsmann Group); in advertising with an agreement with the Disney Group; in online activities with the acquisition of Volftp.
 
Other significant events during the year include the launch of the magazines Tu and Y&S, the establishment of the companies Mondadori Printing and Mondadori.com and the exhibition I Cento Capolavori dell'Ermitage.
