Edizioni Mondadori In the year of its one-hundredth anniversary, Mondadori confirmed its position as Italy's leading book publisher with a wide and varied range of products covering all segments of the market. Prestigious series, such as i Meridiani and SIS (Scrittori Italiani e stranieri) are published alongside series that meet the different needs of readers, such as Strade Blu which features both fiction and non-fiction aimed at a younger target with an innovative approach. In paperbacks, especially the Oscar series, launched in 1965 and a symbol in Italy of low-cost pocket editions, there was a trend towards renewal, with a catalogue that now exceeds 4,000 titles re-issued over the years in new series and with different designs. In 2007 the Oscar series began the publication of a new range of quality trade paperbacks that proved very successful. I Miti series, launched in 1995 and Italy's most successful mass-market book publishing project, also maintained its very successful commercial performance. The early part of 2007 was marked by the success of books linked to the worlds of sport and entertainment, from A un passo dal sogno, by the duo Sfondrini-Zanforlin, to the book by Alessandro Del Piero, Dieci+. Sophie Kinsella's I love shopping per il baby also proved popular with readers while, in the same period, the debut of Mario Calabresi, with Spingendo la notte più in là, a book that offers profound reflections on Italy's recent past was also very successful. A number of titles from 2006 continued to sell well during the year, in particular Gomorra, by Roberto Saviano, which has now sold more than 1 million copies, and Come Dio comanda, by Niccolò Ammaniti, winner of the Premio Strega. The second half of the year saw excellent results for new books by John Grisham, Il professionista, and Patricia Cornwell, Il libro dei morti, but the most important new title was the publication, in a worldwide exclusive anticipation, of the follow-up to Ken Follett's I Pilastri della Terra, Mondo senza fine, which in just a few months sold 700,000 copies. Also the Christmas season was positive for Italian authors in the portfolio, from Voi non sapete by Andrea Camilleri and Il giorno in più by Fabio Volo, to L'armata perduta by Valerio Massimo Manfredi to Una giornata nell'antica Roma by Alberto Angela, Leggere by Corrado Augias and La speranza indiana by Federico Rampini. In non-fiction Bruno Vespa, with a change in formula, addressed the issue of eros and power in L'amore e il potere and met with an enormous success, reaching a new and broader range of readers. The Mondadori Ragazzi children's books area had success with a number of important new titles: Un ponte per Terabithia, which coincided with the release of the film of the same name, Le due guerriere, by Licia Troisi, now widely recognised as one of the leading authors in the fantasy genre in Italy, and, finally, the publication of the latest book by the celebrated cosmologist Stephen Hawking, La chiave segreta per l'universo. The company also strengthened its position in the Reference area, in cooperation with one of the world's leaders in the sector, the German publisher Langenscheidt. |
