Following much curiosity and expectation, electronic books were finally launched in Italy in 2001 by Mondadori, in co-operation with Microsoft Corp. By visiting the site ebook.mondadori.com, readers and technology enthusiasts can enter Italy's first eBook store and buy titles in an electronic format, download them to their own desktop, laptop or pocket PC and then read them using Microsoft Reader, an application software that brings screen reading much closer to the quality of the printed page. With an initial selection of hundred classic and contemporary titles from the Mondadori catalogue, the site currently offers more than 500 titles and is regularly updated.
