Books
In order to expand and strengthen its presence in the Spanish-language market (the world's second largest after English), Mondadori formed a joint venture with Random House, the book division of the Bertelsmann Group, which operates under the name Grupo Editorial Random House Mondadori (2001).
With the Canadian publishing group Harlequin Enterprises, Mondadori established in 1981 the joint venture Harlequin Mondadori for the publication of romantic fiction and which has become a reference point in Italy for all women's fiction.

Magazines
1. Acquisitions
As part of its international strategy, between 2003 and 2005, the Mondadori Group acquired a significant stake, more than 41% of Attica Publications, leader in the Greek magazine market and listed on the Athens stock exchange.
For the Mondadori Group, Attica is an important platform for entry to Eastern European markets, where there is significant potential for growth. In addition to the Greek market, Attica operates in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Serbia.

2. Joint ventures and partnerships
In recent years the Mondadori Group has further consolidated its leadership in the consumer magazine sector, through a wide-ranging policy of agreements and joint ventures with prestigious foreign groups.

Gruner & Jahr/Mondadori, the joint venture established in 1990 between the Mondadori Group and the Bertelsmann Group, publishes Focus, Italy's top-selling monthly. In 1998 this title was joined by a title aimed at teenage girls, Top Girl, while 2000 saw the launch of another monthly, Jack, which established itself as a leading title in the consumer electronics and technology area. The success of Focus has led, in the last three years, to the publication of five new titles: Focus D&R, Focus Extra, Focus Brain Trainer, Focus Junior, Focus Storia and Focus Pico. Finally, in 2005 the Italian version of the well-known international monthly Geo was launched.

With the American Hearst Corporation a joint venture, called Hearst Mondadori, was created in 2000 for the publication of the Italian edition of Cosmopolitan.

Mondadori Rodale is the joint venture between the Mondadori Group and the US publishing group Rodale Press. The activities of Mondadori Rodale are focused on the publication of two titles: the monthly Starbene and the Italian edition of Men's Health (2000).

3. Licensing
The Grazia International Network is part of the Mondadori Group's strategy for international expansion, aimed at exporting around the world - through its main brands - the style, quality and excellence of Italian fashion, design and cooking.
The Grazia International Network, headed by Carla Vanni, began operations in 2004 with the aim of bringing to foreign markets, through a range of international editions of the magazine, Italian elegance and lifestyle, of which Grazia, a point of reference for its journalistic style and quality, is proving to be a qualified interpreter. The success of the international editions of Grazia is based on a capacity to balance the image and strength of and international brand with the local feel and culture. With the launch of the Indian edition in 2008, the number of international editions rose to ten: Great Britain, Holland, United Arab Emirates, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, India and Australia with many more in preparation. Alongside the Grazia International Network, Mondadori's Magazine Division is planning the launch of foreign editions of other titles under licensing agreements with international publishers. The first of these initiatives was successfully launched in 2006 in Thailand with the launch of the international edition of Casaviva, followed in 2008 by Greece. In 2007 the Serbian edition of Sale & Pepe and the Russian edition of Interni, while the first international edition of Flair Mondadori was launched in Austria in 2008.

Printing
Mondadori Printing, which brings together all of the Mondadori Group's printing activities, is one of Europe's biggest and most competitive printing companies, with four plants in Italy - Verona, Cles (Trento), Melzo (Milan) and Pomezia (Rome) - and one in Spain, in Toledo. The plants, originally intended for printing Mondadori products, now generate 36.6% of their sales for mainly foreign third-party clients, and offer a complete, high quality service. In 2007 the company produced 68 million monochrome books, 29 million illustrated books, 484 million magazines, 463 million catalogues, 7 million directories and numerous other products.

Direct
With an international partner of the scale of the Bertelsmann Group the company Mondolibri was created to develop new market activities for the mail order sale of books, a market in which Mondolibri (whose activities revolve around sic clubs and the online sale of books and media products) is the absolute leader (1999).
