Piemme

Founded in 1982, Edizioni Piemme became part of the Mondadori Group in 2003. It is Italy’s fifth-largest publisher with a market share of 4.2% (in 2011).

Piemme is a leading publisher of children’s books (with a 17.4% market share) thanks to the success of the Il Battello a Vapore series and its character Geronimo Stilton. After his first appearance in 2000, Geronimo Stilton has become enormously popular both in Italy and abroad, where the books have been translated into 35 languages and published in 180 countries. Other characters and new series, many of them created by Piemme itself, have proved successful: in addition to the Serie Classiche, a prestigious series of literature for children and teenagers, these have included Ulysses Moore, Mill&Sugar and Gol!, all of which are translated for markets worldwide.

In adult fiction, Piemme has become one of the most important Italian book companies thanks to publishing success story represented by Khaled Hosseini, whose The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns dominated bestseller lists for more than four years.

Piemme fiction covers several other genres, from thrillers (such as the books of Michael Connelly) and historical fiction to women’s writing with authors such as Lauren Weisberger (The devil wears Prada) and Candace Bushnell.

Piemme has successfully developed a non-fiction list with titles on current affairs, memoirs and emotionally compelling personal accounts, as well as the popular women's non-fiction line that was launched by the bestseller Falli soffrire.

The religious sector remains an important element in the company's output. Piemme, which includes among its authors Carlo Maria Martini, Antonio Socci and Vittorio Messori, has expanded its production to include books that deal with testimonies of faith and life that are of considerable interest also to non-believers, such as the books by Dalila Di Lazzaro.

In 2007 the company began to build a paperback catalogue with the launch of the Piemme Bestseller series, bringing together the best of Piemme's production with more than 150 titles today. The Piemme Freeway series was launched in 2009, featuring books aimed primarily at adolescent readers.
