When was Mondadori founded?

Arnoldo Mondadori began his publishing activities in 1907, at the age of only eighteen, with the publication of the magazine Luce!. In 1911 he published his first book, Aia Madama by Tomaso Monicelli, and created the first book series, La Lampada, dedicated to children's literature. In what sectors does Mondadori operate?
Mondadori is one of Europe’s largest editorial groups: it is the biggest book and magazine publisher in Italy and the third-largest publisher of consumer magazines in France. The Mondadori Group operates in all parts of the publishing industry from the creation of the product to the printing, from distribution to commercialisation. The company’s business is divided into five areas: books, magazines, advertising, direct and retail, radio and digital.

What is the revenue breakdown of Mondadori's businesses?
The consolidated revenues of the Mondadori Group in 2009 came to €1,540.1 million. Of these revenues, 23.8% were generated by the Book, 23.6% by the Italy Magazine, 22.3% by the France Magazine, 15.9% by the Italian Advertising, 1.2% by the Direct marketing, 12.4% by the Retail, 0.6 by Radio and 0.2% by other activities.

Where does Mondadori operate?

The Mondadori Group has an international expansion strategy that aims to use Mondadori magazines as a means to export around the world the style, quality and excellence of Italian fashion, design and cuisine. About a fourth of the company’s sales come from outside Italy.

Who are the Mondadori Group's international partners?
The Mondadori Group is involved in a number of important activities together with international partners.
In particular, Mondadori operates in the Spanish-language book market (Spain and Latin America) in a joint venture with Random House, the book publishing division of the Bertelsmann Group, called Grupo Editorial Random House Mondadori (2001).

In 1981, Mondadori and Canadian publisher Harlequin Enterprises formed Harlequin Mondadori, a joint venture that publishes exclusively women’s narratives. Harlequin Mondadori has become the reference point in Italy for this genre of fiction.

In recent years the Mondadori Group has further consolidated its leadership in the magazine market through an insightful policy of forming agreements and joint ventures with prestigious companies abroad. Gruner + Jahr/Mondadori, a joint venture formed in 1990 by Mondadori and Bertelsmann, publishes Focus, the Italian monthly with the largest circulation.

In 2000 Jack, a men’s magazine dedicated to new technology products, was launched. Following the success of Focus, in the last years 7 new titles have been introduced: Focus D&R, Focus Extra, Focus Brain Trainer, Focus Junior, Focus Storia and Focus Pico. In 2005, the Italian edition of the famous monthly Geo hit the market.

Mondadori and US publisher Hearst created the joint venture Hearst Mondadori to publish the Italian edition of the monthly Cosmopolitan (launched in 2000). Mondadori Rodale is the joint venture formed by Mondadori and the American publishing group Rodale Press. The activities of Mondadori Rodale are based on two monthly magazines: Starbene and the Italian edition of Men’s Health created in the US in 1988 by Rodale and launched in Italy in 2000. Today Men’s Health is published in 43 editions around the world.

What is the Mondadori Group's market share in the Italian book market?
The Mondadori Group is the leader in the Italian book market with a value market share of 27.1% nel 2010 (Nielsen Bookscan).
Followed by the RCS Mediagroup with a 11.9%, the Gems Group with 10.6%, Giunti with 7.7% and Feltrinelli with 5.4%.
Other publishers account for the remaining 37.3% of the market.

In the fiction and non fiction areas the Mondadori Group operates, in addition to the Edizioni Mondadori imprint, with Giulio Einaudi Editore, Sperling & Kupfer, Frassinelli, Edizioni Piemme and Edizioni EL for children's books.

In the art publishing sector, the Group operates with the Electa, Mondadori Illustrati and Mondadori Arte imprints.

It is followed, in Italy, by Cairo with a share of 15.4%, the RCS Mediagroup with 10.3%, Universo with 9.6%, Hachette Rusconi with 5.5%, Condè Nast with 4.1% and Gruppo Espresso with 3.2% . Other publishers account for the remaining 17.7% of the market.

Mondadori Pubblicità, which sells advertising for all of the Mondadori Group's titles as well as for a number of third parties, is the absolute market leader in magazine advertising in Italy with a market share of 27%. It is followed by Condè Nast with a 18% share, the RCS Mediagroup with a 17% share, Manzoni with 10%, Hachette Rusconi with 9%, Cairo with 5%, Universo with 2%. The remaining 12% of the market is accounted for by other publishers.

RADIO

How is Mondadori involved in radio?

Mondadori owns the radio channel Radio 101. After acquiring the station in 2005, Mondadori invested to renew the music format and the shows helping R101 to become one of the most listened station in Italy.

When did Mondadori enter into radio ?

Mondadori entered the radio market in January 2005 with its acquisition of Radio 101 One-O-One, the largest private national radio station with a track record of 30 years of success. The name was changed to R101, the music played was altered to appeal to a more adult target and the lineup of shows and presenters was reorganised thanks also in part to the collaboration of some of the most famous people in show business and radio such as Gerry Scotti (who in 2007 became chairman of Monradio), Marco Balestri, Federica Panicucci e many others.

The company has an organisational structure modelled on the traditional governance system. This system is founded on an administrative organ (the board of directors) nominated by the shareholders’ meeting that manages the company and the board of statutory auditors to which is given control of management.

FOUNDATION

What is the Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori?

The Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori is a no profit foundation that has been recognised by the President of the Republic in April 1979. The foundation was established with the aim of conserving, valorising and making available to the public the funds of Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori, since the mid 90s it has become a study and research centre on Italy's publishing culture. The activities of the Fondazione are currently focused on three areas: protecting the historical memory of the publishing industry, promoting research into the role of cultural mediation and spreading a publishing culture.

What is Mediafriends?
Mediafriends is a non-profit social fund established in 2003 by RTI, Mondadori and Medusa with the aim of inventing, producing and promoting events aimed at raising funds for charity purposes.

The Association aims to coordinate the communicative skills of RTI, Medusa and Mondadori with a view to achieving better results in fund raising and building awareness of the causes identified.
Mediafriends' first project was the "La fabbrica del sorriso" (Smile Factory), a gathering of Italy's most popular comedians in an effort to raise money for disadvantaged children. For the occasion Mondadori published La Fabbrica del Sorriso - comici per un mondo migliore, which was sold in bookshops and combined with a number of the group's magazines. All of the profits made from the initiative were donated to the "La fabbrica del sorriso".
